Monitoring my GAME progress:

I am ashamed to say but with the holidays upon us I have been kind of slacking on taking the necessary steps to meet my goals I stated earlier in the course. The few searches I have done, I am still struggling to find ways to integrate technology. One idea I do like is the use of a digital camera or video camera (Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2009 p. 146). This is a great tool for me and my students. I can use these tools in a variety of ways to help my students and athletes reach success in my classes and in their athletic events.

I do not think I need to modify my action plan, I just honestly need to get motivated and start searching a little harder since technology is such an important part of today’s’ education and the success of students. I have learned that there are many ways to incorporate technology into my physical education classes, it is just a matter of figuring out what is going to work and what is not going to work with the diversity of my classes. I have thought of one question that keeps coming to mind is how to incorporate technology with a class of 40 students and then with three other classes in a small sized gym? Another question is how to get my students motivated in using technology without them feeling as if there P.E. time is going to be taken away from them? P.E. is one class that they really like and it is such an important class I would hate to turn them off from P.E. I am still looking forward to getting back to researching and figuring out solutions to all my questions and integrating technology into my teaching, as usually any suggestions would be appreciated.

  1. I can identify with your comment/question regarding how to incorporate technology into your pe classes of 40+ students in a small gym with three other classes. We work in very similar settings! I am fortunate that all of my co-workers are very open to using technology in our classes. I have worked in situations where that was not the case? I can tell you that it is much easier if everyone is on-board and there is consistency in the room. That goes for a lot of things, not just technology use! I think it is particularly important during the winter months when we are all inside, all day every day! Are you and your co-workers on the same page?

By the way, I agree that this is a hard time of year to get things accomplished! Good luck as you continue with your GAME plan.

  2. It is tough to get motivated during the holiday season. There are a number of reasons for this. The first I think is that we are all awfully busy with preparations and planning. The second is that the kids really dont want to focus and would rather just have fun. I applaud you for trying your best to keep focused in this busy time!

No me and my coworkers are not on the same page. I am the only returing PE teacher down in the gym, with 4 new coaches. I work with two who have retired and come back and can only work part time, one who is straight out of college, and another who is not certified and doing the TAPP Program, so i am having to pretty much do everything this year. Thanks for the encouragement.

  4. I do believe it's more challenging for the P.E. teachers compared to those of us who are a little more sedentary. One of our P.E. teachers successfully uses GPS activities with our students. This gets them using technology and lots of exercies around the school and campus. Are you allowed to leave the gym or do you have to stay in there with the other classes? If you don't have GPS devices, maybe some sort of treasure hunt? Just brainstorming here.

    Hang in there!

P.S. I think many of us have felt the same way you do over the holidays. It's tough, coach!

  5. Motivation is definitely the key. The use of digital cameras and video cameras are great tools to use to integrate technology into your classes, especially at their sporting events. You could upload the pictures and actually have the students analyze their moves/plays from the pictures. I use my digital camera in many projects. The students enjoy having their picture taken and then when they learn how to insert them, they are amazed by how big the picture shows up. I then teach them how to crop their picture. I use the digital camera for my 5th grade’s All About Me projects and my 6th grade Acrostic name poem project. When students see pictures of themselves in a positive light, they are motivated to see what will happen next with it.

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving holiday.

  6. I think that using a video camera will be a good idea for all of us. But my school does not supply cameras and I would have to go purchase my own. Which I am still not real sure about. But I think that will be very helpful like you mentioned. A student's skill will increase faster if they can see for themselves what they are doing wrong. Video never lies!! Good luck with your Game Plan!!

  7. Jennifer,
I think that, with all we have to do, it can be very easy to allow our GAME plan to fall to the wayside for when we have time. Don't feel badly about it. For many of us, integrating the technology still feels like something extra we are adding to the plate - even though we know how much it can support and deepen the learning of our students!

I think you could take the video lessons quite far. You could have students use a video camera to film a quick clip of how to do something, or the rules of a particular game they have been taught. It is a great assessment tool! One thing I've been told is that the Flip video cameras are really great, inexpensive cameras to use in the classroom. Right now, I'm seeing them run less than $150.

Also, have you thought about creating a class website, blog, or wiki to post any of these student projects, or enable a discussion about one of your topics? You could also use it to post additional internet resources for students to access (videos, articles, podcasts, etc.).

    Good luck!
